Position Summary

 

This position focuses on the lunch and food service program at YAS Holland, in coordination with West Ottawa Food Service, while also supporting the Administrative Assistant and assisting with the setup and preparation of conferences, meetings, and school events. The role also serves as a liaison to community food resources for students and families, and the ideal candidate will be able to serve our Spanish speaking students and families by reading, writing, communicating, and translating.

 

Essential Job Functions

• Supervise and assist students during lunch periods to promote a safe, respectful, and positive dining environment.
• Support students with eating, meal routines, and appropriate social interactions during lunch, consistent with individual needs and staff direction.
• Oversee all food service operations at Felch in collaboration with West Ottawa Food Service, including:
• Daily communication and coordination with West Ottawa Food Service.
• Ensuring students receive breakfast and lunch as needed.
• Managing lunch counts.
• Receiving meals from the food service truck.
• Recording required food temperatures.
• Serving meals and maintaining a clean, organized serving area.
• Coordinating special dietary accommodations (gluten-free, halal, allergy needs, etc.).
• Managing annual free and reduced meal applications and related documentation.
• Maintain compliance with health department expectations, including kitchen cleanliness, food storage, and documentation.
• Complete medication administration and EpiPen training to provide additional backup support for students with food allergies.
• Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, and transitions throughout the school day to ensure student safety and appropriate behavior.
• Assist students with personal care needs during lunch and transition times, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene, as appropriate.
• Implement established behavior support strategies and reinforce positive behavioral expectations under the direction of instructional and administrative staff.
• Monitor student behavior and communicate observations or concerns to appropriate staff in a timely manner.
• Assist in maintaining clean, organized, and safe lunchroom and common areas before, during, and after meal periods.
• Provide clerical and organizational support to the Administrative Assistant, including filing, copying, preparing materials, and other routine office tasks.
• Assist with the setup, preparation, and cleanup of conferences, meetings, school events, and other activities as assigned, including setting up coffee and refreshments for professional development sessions and meetings.
• Serve as a liaison to community food resources, including mobile food pantries, local farm markets, and food assistance programs, while assisting families with Bridge Card/SNAP applications and other food security resources as appropriate.
• If bilingual (preferred), provide language support for Spanish-speaking students and families by:
• Assisting families with food service paperwork and other school forms.
• Reinforcing language and social skills with multilingual students during lunch.
• Supporting inclusive opportunities for students to participate in appropriate food service tasks.
• Assisting with phone calls, interpretation, and translation of newsletters, notes, and other school communications in collaboration with Maggie D. and Rachel Manzer, our Multilingual Coach.
• During times when food service responsibilities are complete, provide classroom support for multilingual learners and assist the office/teachers with translation, interpretation, and other building needs.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with all ISD policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher in education or human services preferred.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities, especially young adults, strongly preferred.
• CPI, First Aid, and CPR certification, or willingness to be provided training upon hire.

 

Required Skills & Abilities

• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with students and families in both English and Spanish is strongly preferred. 
• Ability to follow teacher and supervisor directions and work as part of a collaborative team.
• Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude when working with students who have varying needs.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, families, and community partners.
• Ability to assist with lifting, transfers, and physical support of students as needed.
• Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) assistive technology and adaptive equipment.

 

Physical & Environmental Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and/or assist students with mobility and self-care needs (up to 50 lbs) with or without mechanical assistance.
• Ability to work indoors, outdoors, and in community settings, including job sites and public transportation.

 

Compensation & Employment Details

• Pay: Hourly rate range of $18.22-$20.25 commensurate with experience
• Schedule: Full-time, 185 days (August-June)
• Employee Group: union-hourly
